Devon Baths and Showers: Hot, Hot Baths
From utility room to personal spa, contemporary bathrooms are designed to cleanse the body and the soul.
It is not far-fetched these days to describe the bathroom as a private retreat or getaway. Think for a moment of a room that is as luxurious as it is functional with cashmere towels, tubs that evoke art on a pedestal and a shower so heavenly it bathes the user in a funnel of light and steam that could very well render the spa obsolete.
Gone are the days of the dark, concealed powder room with stock laminate cabinets and counter-mounted sink. No longer the ugly duckling of residential design, the contemporary bathroom has come into its own as the second most important room in the home for rest, relaxation and, because of luxurious materials and high-tech, high style fixtures, investment.
The contemporary commode abode features a variety of innovative products that combine state of the art technology with impeccable styling. Nothing is left to chance in the tradition of form follows function. Products range from Toto’s Neo Rest 600––a fully automated lavatory––to Boffi’s primordial egg-shaped Po tub to TAG’s decadent SilverTAG shower-cum-steam room featuring 18 over-sized shower-heads, multiple jets and light therapy controlled by a touch screen.
Technology and function alone are not enough to meet the demands of health and beauty regimens where cleansing the inner being is as important as cleansing the outer. Manufacturers and designers create a sensory experience in highly engineered and functional spaces by utilizing light, color, hydro- and aroma- therapies. Products like Chromatherapy by Kohler allow the bather to create a pool of light with the touch of a button. The bather is washed by a series of eight hues that have a tangible effect on their well-being. Chromatherapy, or light therapy, is a popular amenity for soaking tubs and showers.
Internationally-renowned designer Clodagh describes her interpretation of an urban spa retreat as “a serene, soothing environment for today's time-impoverished world.” Known for her warm, monochrome interiors incorporating principles of feng shui, Clodagh’s contemporary salle de bain blends clean lines with non-traditional materials. The hand-poured concrete floor and stainless steel fixtures fuse with a plate-glass waterfall and decorative bamboo screen to evoke Eastern principles of balance and harmony, and engage the senses. The use of light from above and below emphasizes the tonal, monochromatic color palette and creates, “a tranquil oasis dedicated to the rituals of everyday living.” The room features Kohler’s undermounted Greek Bath soaking tub encased in stainless steel and Timpani sinks in the same finish. Clodagh adds dimension to the diminutive space by using mirrors, reflective finishes and lighting.
The use of luminous surfaces like glass, stone and marble engender a sense of serenity and volume of space in contemporary bathrooms. Award-winning architecture and design studio Gabellini Associates, LLP creates a luxurious focal point in the tidy, white on white glass enclosed bathroom at the Olympic Tower in New York.
“The design of the Olympic Tower bathroom turns the space inside out by bringing city light and views inside while exposing the simple pleasures of bathing,” says firm partner Michael Gabellini. With its transparent walls, the room uses the Manhattan cityscape as a backdrop giving the bather the feeling of floating in the clouds.
“The bath is one of the centers of the house, acting as fulcrum of the apartment, visible from multiple angles. The spatial experience from behind the glass is like wearing a pair of sunglasses through which light is polarized and filtered.” In this open setting the custom elliptical sink and hand-carved bathtub, hewn from a single slab of Yugoslavian marble, take center stage as sculptural pieces of art.
Transitional Contemporary
Today’s cutting edge bathroom trends clearly fall on the side of contemporary, rather than traditional. Fixtures, sinks, tubs and showers have simple, clean lines, with a decidedly modern, highly engineered construction. Contemporary favours high-functioning stainless steel, acrylic, glass and enamel over decorative wood and brass. Yet some are apprehensive about installing contemporary fixtures in their home.
Transitional contemporary, an emerging trend, is helping to ease the timid. Transitional contemporary is the wave of the future for the British market . “While Italian designers have always set the precedent in furniture design, new designs are gently encouraging British to leave behind tradition and "transition" into contemporary. The use of wood and soft, organic lines are reminiscent of the past -- while functionality and art propel one into the future. Cabinetry is wall-mounted so that flooring is the background canvas for a new form of art; the bathroom sink and bathroom fixtures.
Familiar yet undoubtedly contemporary, transitional contemporary represents the lavatory’s transition into the mainstream. From utility room to luxury suite, today’s bathroom epitomizes the celebration of self and the ritual of bathing.

We expect more and more from our bathrooms these days.
Besides the bare essentials of WC, basin and bath, people often want a shower, bidet and lots of storage, not forgetting luxuries such as a whirlpool bath.
With carefully planning you should be able to accommodate the items you really want and give yourself some space to move around.
|
|
|
Sanitaryware and furniture
The first choice you are likely to make is which sanitaryware?
White is the most practical choice as it doesn’t date and the look can be easily updated with differently coloured accessories.
However, more important than colour is texture. Bathroom specialists The Blue Tile Company, Exeter, Devon point out that among the design-conscious, wood, stone and glass are still best-sellers.
Next, you want to know if it’s all going to fit – so measure your room and compare it with the dimensions specified in the sales literature. Decide whether you prefer the fitted or freestanding look.
Wall-hung and back-to-wall WCs and bidets combine well with fitted furniture, offering a sleek finish, easy maintenance and maximum storage.
 |
|

If you want a more free-and-easy approach, then choose a modular range of furniture that can be added to or updated as desired, or opt for units on castors for manoeuvrability.
Give some thought to pipework – do you want to conceal it under the floor or behind boxing?
“Bear in mind, the waste pipe for a freestanding bath should run in the same direction as the joists”, says Dale Courtman of the Institute of Plumbing, “or you’ll need to cut through them, which could weaken the floor.”
Perhaps you would prefer wall panelling, which disguises pipework behind streamlined false walls as well as providing the perfect surface for hanging wall-hung sanitaryware and furniture.
Alternatively, you could make a virtue of pipes by placing them in full view – in which case you’ll need copper rather than plastic pipes. |

Walls and Flooring
Mosaic tiling is very popular because it provides a waterproof surface without looking fussy – Fired Earth offers a beautiful selection of colours.
For wet areas in minimal rooms, plain white ceramic or stone tiles are also effective. Paint approved for bathroom use can be used to add splashes of colour.
Make sure that flooring is practical, safe and resistant to moisture.
It is important to remember that some wooden and laminate floors are not recommended for bathrooms because of potential damage by moisture ingress. Solid boards, however are fine if you make sure they are properly sealed.
|
|
Tiles are obviously a good option for the bathroom as they are resistant to water damage.
They can, however, be cold under foot, so it’s worth considering installing under-floor heating for added comfort.
Limestone tiles can add another elemental dimension to a modern bathroom.
But
remember that they will need resealing around every six, so be prepared to invest time to keep them looking pristine.
Rubber, linoleum and laminated cork are also good options. Not only are they warm and comfortable underfoot, but they come in strong contemporary design, which can complement modern bathrooms.

Water Works
If you want a shower, make sure it’s compatible with your boiler system.
“There’s nothing worse than having a fabulous new bathroom if you only get a dribble of a shower,” says The Blue Tile Company.
With a cold water tank, you need to know how many vertical metres there are between the tank and your shower.
Sometimes you will need to install a pump to ensure a more forceful spray.
If you have a combination boiler, check the literature to see what flow rate it should provide for a shower.
“You should also check that taps are going to be compatible. Continental taps generally need a higher pressure rate than our gravity-fed (low Pressure) systems.”

|
|

Also recommended is putting in a water softener to prevent the build up of limescale deposits and to keep the shower running well and looking good.
Another tip is to go for a tiled wet room rather than a separate shower enclosure and tray. It’s simple and efficient.
When choosing a WC, bear in mind that wall-hung models leave the floor space clear for easy cleaning.
For ease of movement and space to undress, allow at least 70cm space in front of or to the side of a bath or shower and in front of the basin.

Lighting
Try to avoid central ceiling light as it casts shadows – go instead for strategically placed halogen spots for more flexibility and a more natural light for applying make-up.
“It’s better to put in too many lights than too few because you don’t have to use them all”.

Low-voltage lighting is ideal for bathrooms because at 12V it’s much safer and can even be used in a shower enclosure.
For safety, avoid freestanding or hanging lights. Use a pull-cord or put the light switch outside the room.

Devon Bathroom Designers offer some helpful hints for transforming your bathroom design:
If you are bored of the way your bathroom looks, don’t despair. The bathroom is the one room in many homes that can look tired and worn out over time. But with very little money it is possible to add that much needed sparkle to your bathroom design.
Remember, there are many painters & decorators and interior designers working throughout Devon if you need an extra helping hand!
One of the largest and most common problems with bathrooms is their tendency to get cluttered. It’s easy to leave towel rails and towels all over the place so the best thing to do is clean up the bathroom before anything else is even decided.
Try buying baskets and other space saver products that will give you more space to work with. Additionally, make these options accessable to all or else the same old problems will occur time and time again.
Next, purchase some extra towel racks and install them so that there is a towel holder within easy reach of almost anywhere in the bathroom. Another advantage of having extra towel rails, apart from adding to your overall bathroom design, is that you can use some of them to put up luxury towels for show that will really compliment the appearance of the room and highlight the colours chosen in your bathroom design.
Additionally, new towels can also make the simple difference to a bathroom. Towels are inexpensive and available at many shops throughout Devon and will certainly add a visual point to your new bathroom design.
Another simple and easy change that can add to your new bathroom design is the flooring Thankfully, many bathrooms are small and therefore do not require masses of materials. Bathroom flooring options include vinyl sheets, ceramic tile, or vinyl tile squares. If you want inexpensive and simple opt for vinyl tile squares as they are easy to lay.
Alternatively, vinyl sheets and stone flooring can be a great focal point of a bathroom. Simply contact our local Devon flooring specialists for more advice and a free quote today.
Don’t forget important features such as changing or updating the door knobs on your cabinets, and changing the shower curtain and rings if you have one. This will instantly freshen up your bathroom and make the whole room look more eye-catching and appealing.
Taking these points on-board when designing your bathroom will save you lots of money and hassle and transform your tired bathroom into one of pleasure and comfort.
