Devon Solar Renewable Energy Specialists, BECO SOLAR of Dartmouth have been designing, supplying and installing PV systems since 1989. Our systems can be seen in many applications including roadside traffic counters & weather stations, out at sea on navigation buoys and on boats and caravans.
PV systems can be broadly split into three groups, those with a battery for energy storage (off-grid), battery less systems like solar water pumps and grid-connected systems (on-grid, also battery less). The latter is by far the largest PV market in developed countries, direct current (DC) generated by the PV array is converted to alternating current (AC) at mains voltage & frequency (230Vac, 50Hz) by a grid-synchronous inverter and fed directly into a building's electrical network. If there is an immediate requirement for that energy then it is used to power whatever appliances are in operation, if not then it is "exported" into the supply network via an export meter where suppliers will buy it back at the same rate that you pay for imported electricity (eg SWEB Green Tariff). With grid-connected systems you can think of the grid as your energy store, exporting during the day and importing at night. |

BECO SOLAR are Project Partners with BP Solar as well as being their Distributors in UK & Ireland. BP Solar manufacturer premium grade mono crystalline& polycrystalline silicon PV modules. We specialise in PV systems, manufacturing our own range of controllers and building custom PV power supplies for industrial, commercial & domestic uses.
The DTI have a grant scheme to help overcome the high initial cost of installation. The DTI's current Major Photovoltaic Development Grant administered by the Energy Saving Trust will pay up to 50% of the costs of both off-grid and on-grid PV systems which are building related and between 0.5kWp and 5.0kWp in size. Systems must be designed, installed and commissioned by accredited installers. A typical 1.0kWp (kilowatt peak) PV system will occupy an area of 8m² and if south-facing at a pitch of 35° will generate around 900kWh/annum. The installed costs vary according to style and size but are typically in the range of £5,500 to £7,500per kWp. PV on the roof is a very elegant way of generating some, if not all, of one's yearly energy requirements with no running costs and more importantly, no pollution. A typical household, careful with it's use of electricity, should be self-sufficient over a year with a 3kWp system and would save over 1100 Kgs of Carbon Dioxide per year. |
