Devon Care Home, The
Check House,
Seaton,
is one of Devon's finest care homes where we never
stop caring.
We are situated
in a stunning
location
on the cliffs
overlooking
the sea.
Our facilities
have recently
been refurbished
and we have
single and
double rooms
available
in our brand
new award
winning
Rossetti
Wing. The
Check House
Care Home
is ideal
for short
holidays
and breaks
or carer
respite
stays and
all our
staff are
fully qualified
and experienced
to care
for you
whilst letting
you enjoy
your privacy.
The weeks
fly by and
we are now
into the summer months.
I can’t
believe
that we
are past
Midsummer’s
Day already.
Still, we
have had
some glorious
weather
which has
been thoroughly
enjoyed.
Our gardens
are such
a special
place in
the summer
and from
our top
terrace
you get
the most
spectacular
views over
our lawns
to the sea
and cliffs
beyond.
It is always
rewarding
when guests
return home
thoroughly
refreshed
and happy
- as they
invariably
do! Mrs
R and Mrs
P came for
two weeks
holiday
all the
way from
Dorking
recently.
They are
twin sisters
who are
well into
their nineties.
They were
positively
beaming
as they
said their
good byes
and wrote
such a thoughtful
message
to all the
staff: “
Thank you
managers,
organisers,
chefs and
many other
helpers
for giving
us such
a relaxed
time during
our holiday
with you.
The loving
cheerful
help of
all your
carers for
us, fun
in the activities,
and quiet
times enjoying
the peace
and tranquillity
of the garden,
will send
us home
rested and
refreshed.”
Recently,
I was sent
a small
brochure
that advertised
the attractions
of staying
at the Check
Houses care
home set
in Devons
spectaular
countryside,
when it
was run
as a guest
house. It
must date
from the
nineteen
fifties
as the tariff
for dinner,
bed and
breakfast
was nine
guineas
including
a bath if
you wished
to have
one. There
were obviously
no en-suites
in those
days but
all rooms
had hot
and cold
water and
interior
sprung mattresses.
We now charge
£125
per night
for respite
care or
holidays,
good value
I always
think when
it includes
all meals,
laundry,
entertainment
and outings,
24 hour
care as
required
, and of
course that
all important
sherry before
meals. We
have recently
made our
meal times
in the dining
room much
more flexible,
so that
residents
can choose
when they
wish to
appear.
And of course,
room service
is always
available
if solitary
peace and
quiet is
preferred.
In
1977, Country
Life published
an article
entitled
“The
Trevelyans
at Seaton.”
It is a
fascinating
account
of Sir Walter
and Lady
Pauline’s
vision for
Seaton –
much of
it perhaps
unfortunately
never realised
as Lady
P died soon
after her
house was
completed
in 1866.
Calverley
Lodge (as
The Check
House Care
Home was
known until
1918) cost
the grand
sum of £3980
12s 5d to
build and
the furnishings
–
many “very
modern”
and from
Heals -
£468
12s 6d,
a vast sum.
The staircase
built of
Beer stone
with a balustrade
of black
wrought
iron entwined
with lilies
is still
in place
but unfortunately
not a trace
of those
furnishings.
Still, it
is good
to have
such a lovely
interior
enjoyed
by so many
in contrast
to its original
purpose
as the holiday
home of
a wealthy
Victorian
Lady and
her artistic
friends.
