Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock. It’s main constituents are quartz, chlorite, mica & calcite. Slate is formed when ocean or riverbed sediments are compressed and heated by the earth's crust.
Traditional slate flooring is becoming increasingly popular as customers come back to a tried a tested type of stone. For centuries slate has been used for flooring all over the world.
Its natural hard wearing properties make it ideal for tiling in high traffic areas, such as kitchens and hallways. With the added benefit of being aesthetically unique, slate is a natural product which cannot be imitated. Its unique qualities and appearance are often preferred to man-made products.
We sell both reclaimed Delabole Slate Flagstones and new Brazilian Slate floor tiles. The Delabole Flagstones are subject to availability, whereas we hold large stocks of the Brazilian tiles.
All our Brazilian floor tiles are calibrated; this means that they are all of an even thickness with precision cut edges, allowing for quick and accurate laying, superior finish and reduced waste. It is great for use with underfloor heating as the tiles are only 10-12mm thick, and with the slate being generally dark in colour it holds the heat well.
The surface of the Brazilian tiles we supply are textured and described and being riven-although, some slabs may be riven others may be smooth. Most of our slabs can also be laid either side up, giving you a choice of finish. This is the traditional finish which is associated with this type of stone. No two tiles are the same, so be prepared for quite a bit of variation. This really is however, part of the charm and why it is so popular.
We stock four of the larger sizes of Slate, however, we can get smaller sizes if you so wish. Which sizes you go for, depends on whether you want a uniformed or a random look. In our showroom we have our Slate flooring laid down in different patterns to give you examples of how it will look in your own home.
Whichever way, you can't go wrong with our slate flooring! |
