Ian Trowsdale of Devon Wood Floors is a second generation flooring craftsman who provides top quality, expert flooring services across Devon.

Did you know that there has been a significant increase in the cases of asthma and eczema in the UK over the last few decades? Although across Europe the rate of asthma has been increasing, Britain has a significantly higher proportion of both adults and children who suffer with severe asthma than any other European country. This includes higher rates of serious symptoms, hospital visits and even deaths due to asthma. While there are several factors involved in this, one of the causes is that here in the UK fitted carpet is far more common, providing a habitat for dustmites which are thought to trigger attacks and allergies.

Choosing the right floor as an alternative to carpet for your home isn't simply a matter of tearing the shagpile from the floorboards and sanding the bare wood back to a smooth shiney surface. You should consider the practicality and health issues, as well as the cost. Simply sanding down floorboards may be fine, but only if they were installed properly in the first place. Unless they are good quality wood and close fitting then this may be a bad idea. Laying a hardwood or engineered wood floor over the top is one option, but this may be an extravagance.

Surprisingly few people would consider vinyl. Traditionally relegated to kitchens and bathrooms, vinyl flooring has come a long way since the material was more commonly used for music. In the kitchen or the bathroom, where that a non-slip, water resistant and easy to clean surface was ideal for flooring vinyl prospered. But there have been some changes.

First and foremost is the quality of vinyl flooring. It isn't just used where function is more important than style, not anymore. Vinyl flooring has come on leaps and bounds in the last forty years, mainly through the innovative work being done by companies such as Amtico. The commercial market has been snapping up these floors simply because they have represented the best compromise between cost, ease of maintenance, durability and looks. But the domestic market has been slow to catch up, which is only recently been changing.

Vinyl can look like almost anything. From abstract patterns to wood, stone or ceramic tile and even glass, but unlike laminates it can have the same texture. It also doesn't have the drawbacks of natural floorings, it doesn't need careful maintenance, just sweeping and occasional moppings. It resists stains and fading from sunlight. Significantly, it is a damn sight cheaper than wood stone and cermic tiles. Not only buying it, but having it professionally fitted, simply because it is quicker to fit.

Amtico have spent forty years producing some of the worlds best vinyl floor coverings. With all of the experience, mostly in the competitive and demanding commercial flooring market, Amtico have developed their craft to a fine art. With a wide range of flooring designs over a range of products, Amtico have specialised in producing top quality flooring at very cost effective prices.

They have done this by being at the forefront of technological innovation in production techniques and development of new materials. Devon Wood Floors offer Amtico flooring across Devon, as flooring craftsmen they can assure you of a wonderful floor which is gorgeous to look at, comfortable underfoor and very easy to care for and clean. All at a bargain prices.

R and S Carpets outline the advantages and disadvantages of Vinyl Flooring and installation the flooring type correctly.

Vinyl Flooring Advantages and Disadvantages.

Vinyl flooring has a number of advantages, which is why it has become increasing more popular as a flooring type in the home. Vinyl is very durable, comfortable underfoot, stain resistant and easy to maintain. Vinyl is available in a wide range of colours, patterns and even realistic replications of other flooring materials. Vinyl Flooring is particularly ideal for active families and those with pets, as well as being a good choice for many commercial settings.

Vinyl comes in two forms: sheet and tile, each form inevitably has it own pros and cons.

Vinyl sheet's popularity generates mainly from its adaptability for use in any part of the home, ranging from high traffic areas such as hallways and family rooms to wet areas such as kitchens and bathrooms. It is also a very popular choice for laundry rooms and cellars / basements. However Vinyl does not suit stairs, as it is designed only for flat, level surfaces.

Vinyl tile flooring does have a much lower life expectancy compared with vinyl sheet but it also have benefits in that it is much easier and cheaper to repair as only the damaged or stained portion needs to be replaced due to the peel-and-stick nature of the tiles.

Quality

As with everything in life, you get what you pay for. Vinyl sheet flooring is expected to last 20-30 years if it is of good quality and properly installed and cared for.

At the low end vinyl is relitively thin with a shallow wear layer on top of a vinyl or felt baking. A pattern is printed on its surface, The top layer is clear vinyl. It may seem brittle or stiff and could be subject to breaking or tearing. Its life expectancy is relatively short—usually less than ten years depending on the amount of traffic.

However higher quality vinyl sheet flooring usually has colour throughout, not just printed on. The wear layer is therefore much thicker and may last up to 30 years depending on the manufacturer. It is scuff resistant, and can take a lot more abuse.

Vinyl tile has a lower life expectancy however, from just 5 to 20yrs, depending on the initial quality of the vinyl used and the level of care and maintenance it receives

DIY vs Professional Installation

Vinyl sheet is not one of the more DIY-friendly floors. The biggest problem is cutting the vinyl sheet to the correct size, and cutting around awkward shapes, e.g. the basin and toilet in a bathroom. Sheet vinyl is also very heavy and extremely bulky to work with. For this reason it is better to use a professional to install the flooring.

In all cases, the subfloor that the vinyl is to be installed on to must be flat and dry and most of all smooth. If not, an embossing leveler may need to be used to smooth over textured surfaces, patch irregularities or fill in grooves. If there are any irregularities on the subfloor the vinyl will crack and tear over time.
