Stone walling
hedges in natural stone throughout Devon and Cornwall
Cornish hedging and walling
in natural stone is one of the oldest skills in the world being
carried out today. Evidence shows that well over 4000 years ago
man was building stone wall using natural stone in West Cornwall.
Today contractors
like Roger Clemens continue too use these skills in a variety of
schemes. Although dry stone walls are built over Britain, and indeed
the world, the Westcountry specialty is the Cornish Hedge.
A Cornish Hedge is really an earth or subsoil bank faced each side
with stone. Roger and his men have built over 130 miles of Hedge
in the last 26 years.
Why
are they called 'hedges' not 'walls'? Because they are living things.
Part of a hedge is the vegetation that grows on it, this can be
grass, flowers or trees. Stone hedges are environmentally friendly
barriers and are a host for reptiles, small mammals, moths, butterflies
and bees as well as providing a home for many nesting birds.
Roger Clemens stone walling
and hedging team have undertaken their work on road schemes, farms,
housing developments, pipelines, wind farms, schools, the Eden Project,
Hampton Court and Chelsea Flower Shows and commercial developments
etc ...
