Where should you buy your garden machinery? The best prices are usually found at the large retail outlets such as the ‘shed’ stores, but are they really the best value? What do you get for your money at these outlets?

The truth is that you hand over your money and come away with a very large and heavy cardboard box. You have almost certainly received no assistance with your choice, or advice on the right model.

You have to load an awkward box into your car and unload it at home, then assemble handlebars, grassboxes etc, as well as filling with fuel and oil and starting the machine for the first time. Breaking with Tradition (March 2008)

With ever greater demands on our time we all look for time saving new ideas. Many of us are faced with long hours each week cutting the lawn and disposing of the clippings. Mulching mowers are now becoming more widely available, and appear to be a great time saver, but are they right for you?

Barrie Whittock of Garden Kit at Colaton Raleigh believes that mulching can be very beneficial for many people but there are times when it is definitely not suitable.

He says “It is possible to get as good a finish with a mulching mower as from a collector, but in order to do so you must cut your grass regularly, maybe as often as twice a week in peak growing season, but of course the cutting will be much quicker.

Which Lawn Mower Should you Choose . (March 2008)

We are approaching the main lawn mowing season and sales of new mowers are on the increase. Customers often ask advice on which mower to buy, should it be a rotary or a cylinder type? Should it be push or self propelled? Should it have wheels or a roller? 

Many people still believe that the best cuts are only obtained with the old-fashioned cylinder mower but I strongly dispute this.

A well maintained rotary mower with a rear roller is capable of producing an excellent finish on the average lawn and is much easier to use and cheaper to maintain than the old cylinder.

Of course, if your lawn is to bowling green or cricket square standard then you will need the cylinder, but bear in mind that you will need to mow every few days otherwise the mower will not like it!

It may be your lawn is less than perfect, especially in this rural area where moles, badgers, deer (and children?) often cause damage, which makes your lawn more akin to a farmers field.

Winter in the Garden. (December 2007)

The short days  of winter usually limit what we can do in the garden to a bit of general tidying up, cutting back excess growth of shrubs or even cutting down small trees and bushes. Disposing of the waste is getting to be more of a chore each year, as bonfires are now considered to be antisocial.

The machinery most in demand at this time of year are chainsaws, chipper/shredders and blowers. Small chainsaws are ideal for cutting material into manageable sized logs for transport to the recycling centre or for an open hearth fire whilst the chipper will reduce volume of brushwood considerably allowing it to be used as a mulch or bagged for disposal.

Book your Lawnmower Service Soon! (November 2007)

A consequence of living in this beautiful part of the world is that the grass grows for a longer period of time, which results in a very short period of inactivity for your lawnmowers between the end of this years cutting and the start of next season.

Garden Kit at Unit 2, The Old Sawmills, Colaton Raleigh, has now been trading for 5 years and has built up a very good customer base of local people. The owner, Barrie Whittock who runs the business with his wife Lyn, is very pleased with the progress so far. He has found that in general local people like to deal with local businesses and especially with small businesses where they get personal service and good sound advice.
