At Least One Month Before Your Furniture Removal |
 |
|
| |
- Clean out your closets, loft, cellar, cupboards, toy chests and bookshelves
- Remember to talk to your children about the move, make sure they understand what's going on. Moving can be a stressful time for children too.
- Clear out and throw away any unwanted items. One way to do this would be to have a house clearance sale, or get a spot at a local car boot sale. This way, not only will you get rid of the unwanted clutter in your home, but will also contribute some money towards the cost of the move.
- If your still finding things you can't seem to get rid of, for example clothing, don't forget the many charity shops, libraries etc. that will be in your local town.
- Obtain receipts for tax purposes.
- Next comes the larger appliances, things to consider are whether the appliances are in good condition, also consider style and practical aspects. Is your gas cooker looking a bit 'well-worn'? Is it going to fit in with the new kitchen? Does the new home have gas or is it all electric? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, you might want to consider selling some of your old appliances and buying new ones.
- Ensure that you have a complete inventory of the goods be moved.
- Another thing to do is consider if you will be moving your plants or just keeping your favourites.
- Now is a good time to start using up your frozen foods. these cannot be transported safely. Another idea is to reduce your tinned goods as well, as they take up valuable space on the removal van, plus can generally be heavy.
- Also, inform the post office and your regular correspondents of the date of your move .
- Don't forget the pets, now is the time to take them to the vet in order to see if there's anything they need before the big move.
- Register children for their new school; transfer all necessary school records as required

At Least Two Weeks Before Your Removal |
 |
|
| |
- Confirm the date you wish to cease services from telephone, gas, electric and other miscellaneous companies.
- Also, inform these companies of your change of address and the start date of services at the new address. (Waiting for service to begin can often result in costly hotel and meal expenses.).
- Ask your present doctor and dentist for referrals in the new area which you are moving to. Transfer medical records and make sure your prescriptions are up to date. Also make sure you have copies of your prescriptions should you need to get more.
- Remember to transfer any homeowners insurance policies and that they will come in effect at the new address.
- Valuables: If you have any safe deposit boxes, now is the time to empty them. Also make an inventory of your various valuables (jewellery, cash, coins, stamps etc etc.). Do not ship these with the removals company, either carry them with you during the move or have them sent to your new address via secured and insured delivery services.
- Combustible and flammable items cannot be transported by the removals company. Such combustable and flammable items include oil-base paints, bleach, cleaning and lighting fluids and matches. All aerosol cans (including hair sprays, shaving creams, deodorants, household cleaners, insecticides, tarnish removers and car cleaners) should be used up or discarded prior to moving.

One Week Before the Removal Company Arrives |
 |
|

- If you are eligible, remember to keep a detailed record and receipts of your moving expenses for income-tax purposes. This includes transportation, lodging, meals, etc.
- Notify Post Office of your change of address.
- Clean out your closets, loft, cellar, cupboards, toy chests and bookshelves
- Remember to check with any dry cleaners, appliance repairers, etc, that you do not have any items still with them. This would also be a good time to remind your neighbour about that hedge trimmer he borrowed from you 6 months ago.
- Next comes the three essential boxes, or 'ready boxes'. These will be the ones you either carry with you or be last on, first out of the van.
- The first ready box will be essentials from your kitchen and bathroom, you may also want to include some DIY essentials like a hammer, screwdriver, pilers, screws and nails. But the most important thing in this box, I'm sure you'll agree, will be the kettle!
- The second ready box will contain your first aid kit and all your medicines.
- Lastly, the third ready box will be for the children, it will contain a few toys and their other essential treasures, as well as books, snacks and games to keep them amused during the journey.
- Defrost and clean your refrigerator and freezer at least 24 hours in advance of the move.
- Keep your telephone connected through your moving day, also make sure you have your mobile phone charged and with you at all times. If the removal men have a mobile phone on them, be sure to get their numbers.
