Until more recently, houses were constructed with solid wood floors. However since the invention of the fitted carpet, most people have regarded floorboards as nothing more than a structure in which to lay the carpet. This is a great shame a well prepared natural wood floor can look great, are very hardwearing and are easy to keep clean.

People are now widely using laminate flooring, but why spend thousands of pounds laminating the rooms in your house (leveling and underlay may be required) when you most probably have good quality wooden floorboards hidden underneath your carpet.

Sanding a floor professionally is an art! It takes great skill, patience and experience to get a good quality finish on the wood. The first step that we take at Total Floor Care in the sanding process is to fix any loose boards and check for vulnerable wires and heating pipes before the boards are nailed down again, avoiding burst water pipes etc.

If you are having the gaps filled between the boards this comes next. The filler or wood strips will be level with the boards after sanding.

If you have wide gaps in your floor, gap filling should be considered, it effectively plugs the gaps so that air and dust cannot rise through them in to the room. The floorboards would have originally been fairly tightly laid. The natural shrinking of wood means that over time gaps can exceed 5mm in width.

At Total Floor Care, we fill the gaps in the floorboards with strips of wood cut to the correct thickness. Other companies may use filler but this will crack and fall through over time, particularly if the gap is in excess of 3mm. We would then finish the gap filling by sanding the pieces of wood down so that they are level with the rest of the floor.

Once our expert floor sanders are satisfied that the floor boards are clean and smooth they will only then begin begin the staining of the wood, if required, and begin applying the varnish.
