Although everyone now-adays is encouraged to recycle
as much as possible the most important thing is
to minimise waste through reduction and reuse. This
will have a significant impact on the amount of
waste going to landfill.
Examples of how you could help:
Donate unwanted clothing and small household
items to charity shops and jumble sales
Pack your lunch in a reusable box rather than
foil or cling film
Buy loose fruit and vegetables at the supermarket
Reuse old carrier bags, then use them as bin liners
Compost your green waste by using a home compost
bin, or take garden waste to your local household
waste site (local tip)
For picnics and barbecues avoid throw away crockery
and cutlery; use washable plastic items instead
Use refilled products where possible
Use rechargeable batteries for toys, clocks and
personal stereos
Use ‘crates’ to take home groceries
or support ‘bag for life’ schemes
Reuse paper that has been printed on one side
for shopping lists, reminders or for children
to paint on
