 Bridgwater
is a market town in mid Somerset and also an important
crossing point for the River Parrett from which
its original wealth as an inland port was derived.
The area is bound to the east by the Sedgemoor
levels and to the west by the Quantock Hills and
has good links with the south west through two
motorway junctions and intercity railway station.
The population is approximately 30,000 and there
is a large agricultural hinterland. Today Bridgwater's
"in town" prosperity is derived from distribution
centres and industry. Apart from Yeovil it is
the main industrial town within Somerset.
Bridgwater enjoys easy communications with the rest of the country via 2 motorway junctions and an Intercity railway station.
 Many
rural pursuits can be enjoyed in the surrounding
countryside which includes the Quantock Hills
and the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal.
Today Bridgwater still retains many traditional events, one of which is the celebrated Bridgwater Carnival. The procession through the town of over 100 illuminated floats takes place annually, close to Guy Fawkes Night. |
