Often
referred to as the Gateway to Dartmoor, is an
Ancient Historic country town with a wealth of
character. Within the town there is a Heritage
Trail which includes a picturesque river walk
and also a pleasant walk around the medieval buildings
including the twelfth century church.
Bovey Tracey has a good mixture of private and convenience shops, restaurants, three banks, primary school and a new health centre. Further shopping facilities are available at the market town of Newton Abbot which is approximately six miles away, whilst the city of Exeter is a short drive to the north. Within the town there are opportunities for various recreational activities and numerous clubs and organisations, including football, cricket and rugby as well as an outside swimming pool.
The
Devon Guild of Craftsmen is located in the picturesque
riverside mill adjacent to the 17th century bridge
over the River Bovey. Further attractions include
the House of Marbles situated in the old Bovey
pottery with its interesting displays and the
Cardew Tea Pottery with its unique and famous
teapots.
A major attraction is the nearby open moorland of the Dartmoor National Park which offers 365 square miles of superb scenery. The area offers extensive scope for walkers and climbers, as well as plenty of opportunities for fishing and riding. Yarner Wood nature reserve and the popular trio of Kennick, Tottisford and Trenchford reservoirs are all close by.
The A38 Expressway which links the cities of Plymouth and Exeter and joins the M5 Motorway network is approximately 3 miles away from the town, making the area popular with commuters. |
