Honiton
is one of the traditional "gateways" to Devon
which is well known for its lace and antiques.
This pleasant residential and market town has
a population in excess of 9,000 and is the shopping
centre for a large part of East Devon with good
schools, churches and opportunities for sport
and recreation. Unfortunately disastrous fires
in the 18th century destroyed much of its past,
but the rebuilding has, to a great extent, remained
in keeping and today the town centre is largely
an attractive 18th century townscape.
The
town has good public sporting and educational
facilities, with the Community Sports Hall providing
a large space for indoor sport and training.
The nearby covered and heated pool is very popular during the summer and autumn months. Sports Clubs have their grounds and club houses in the town and golf is available at the Honiton Golf Club with a course 800ft above sea level with views of Dartmoor.
The
local schools are modern and well equipped and
provide education for all ages including a Day
Special School, Preparatory School and a Community
College. The Community College not only educates
the 11-18 year olds, but also has classes for
adults and facilities for many local activities.
The town is ideal for commuters due to the accessibility to the major roads and rail routes, but is also preferable to people looking to retire to the area because of its short distance to coastal and country towns. |
