Exmouth
lies on the coast 11 miles from Exeter at the
mouth of one of the country's most beautiful river
estuaries. Exmouth's sunshine record is probably
the best for Devon and rainfall is lower than
in other parts of the area, both of which are
due to the protection of the nearby Haldon Hills.
The town is well served with shops of all types, the main shopping centre being within a few minutes walk of both the bus and train stations. Extensive car parking is also provided within the town centre. This elegant Georgian resort offers three miles of clean sandy beach with safe bathing along the majority of its length. The population, which has increased in the last few years, is now in the region of 33,000. Extensive new developments on the outskirts of the town have ensured an adequate supply of good housing at prices to suit all incomes. Local shops serve these areas and there are regular bus services to and from the town centre. Exmouth has its own hospital which is on the same site as the Health Centre where several local doctors hold surgeries.
Exmouth
is within a short driving distance of easy links
to the M5 and primary roads, mainline railway
stations and regional airport. There are regular
bus and train services between Exmouth and Exeter
as well as bus links to other local and principal
towns in East Devon.
Educational facilities are good, there being eight County Primary schools and several private schools within Exmouth.
The
Community College is the principal establishment
for secondary education in the area, offering
exceptionally wide educational opportunities to
its students. The college also offers an excellent
range of Adult Educational courses.
A wide variety of recreational facilities are available in and around the town, including all the usual watersports, tennis, squash, football, cricket and bowls. The Exmouth Sports Centre and Swimming Pool offers many of these activities at reasonable cost.
One of the greatest charms of Exmouth is its location in the heart of the unspoilt East Devon countryside. Woodbury Common, an area of open moorland is just 5 miles away and is well known for its wildlife, whilst the Estuary is a must for bird-watchers. The Regency resorts of Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton are a short drive to the east and other attractive villages such as Otterton, Woodbury and Lympstone are all within easy distance.
