The
bustling market town of Kingsbridge lies at the
head of the Salcombe Estuary and is the undisputed
capital of The South Hams, an old English word
meaning "sheltered place", which covers an area
of some 340 square miles between the Rivers Dart
and Tamar.
Kingsbridge and the surrounding towns and villages are popular holiday destinations, with much of the area lying within an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty attracting visitors from both home and abroad. Sandy beaches, hidden coves, quaint villages with thatched cottages and character filled inns are all within easy reach, as are breathtaking rural and coastal walks.
The
town itself is steeped in history, the church
has a 13th century tower and parts of the picturesque
"Shambles" date from the 16th century. Nowadays,
however, Kingsbridge has a distinct role to play
with its facilities serving many of the nearby
communities. There are monthly farmers' markets
held in the town square adjacent to the newly
constructed bandstand. Summer music festivals
and carnival processions grace the promenade and
quay-side areas.
But Kingsbridge is not just for summer; the year culminates with a majestic illuminated carnival procession through the town's narrow streets. For sporting enthusiasts, the town boasts a purpose built sports and leisure complex together with a newly completed indoor swimming pool. There are 18 hole links golf courses at nearby Thurlestone and Bigbury. The sailing Mecca of Salcombe is just six miles to the south where all aspects of water sports are available.
The nearest main line train station is at Totnes some fourteen miles distant and the A38 Devon Expressway which leads to the M5 and motorway network some eleven miles away. The historic city of Plymouth is approx twenty three miles to the west and offers a wide range of facilities including an airport, mainline railway station and ferry links to the continent.
