Truro School Prep (formerly Treliske) is Cornwall’s largest preparatory school with just over 200 girls and boys ranging in age from 3 to 11.  Set in beautiful wooded grounds and surrounded by a golf-course, the school was established on its own distinct site in 1933 as the junior house of Truro School, just outside the city centre.  Truro School, itself was founded as a Methodist School in 1880 and remains the only HMC School in the County of Cornwall.  It was originally a Direct Grant Boys’ Grammar School but became independent in 1976.  Both schools became fully co-educational in 1990.

The main Prep School building is a beautiful Victorian granite mansion which retains many of its original features, and includes a beautiful Dining Hall for the pupils to eat their lunches in, a science room and a new library opened by Michael Foreman, the author and illustrator in October 2005.

Truro Prep is a warm, friendly school, where the Methodist values of the founders are very much reflected in the day-to-day life of the school.  The school aims to ensure that pupils are happy and enjoy their experience of school, whilst being aware of the world around them and the needs of others.  Academic progress is valued and results at Key Stage One and Two, which are well above the national average for both maintained and independent schools reflect the solid progress made by pupils.  As a school, however, we also value the importance of the broad curriculum; pupils undertake a wide range of curricula subjects alongside the English and Mathematics, such as Design and Technology in our own bespoke workshop, Art, year long tasters in languages (French, Latin, Spanish and German), PE and Games including swimming in the school’s own heated indoor pool.  The school has its own Sports Hall and extensive games fields.

The average class size is just under 17 and class size rarely rises above 20. Small classes allow for close personal attention to the needs of each pupil.  Progress is closely monitored both informally by the teachers and through tests which monitor progress against potential.

From age 7 pupils are increasingly taught by subject specialists hence moving around the school from lesson to lesson forms an integral part of the school day.  There are specialist teaching rooms for Information and Communication Technology, Design and Technology, Art, Music, and Science.

Music and Drama are an important aspect of the life of the school with year group productions in the school’s assembly hall, or in their final year, in Truro School’s purpose built Burrell Theatre with all the added wizardry and effects that can be achieved there.  The choir performs regularly at concerts, chapel services and for special occasions.  In Year 4 (age 8 to 9) pupils undertake instrumental lessons as part of the curriculum choosing from the violin, cello, double-bass or brass for a year; this means that every pupil in the school has learnt a musical instrument for at least a year.  A wide range of instruments can be learnt with the peripatetic music staff in our new music practice rooms and many pupils play in the school’s orchestra.

Sport is taken very seriously with representative teams in netball, rugby, soccer (boys and girls), rounders, cricket, hockey, cross-country, swimming, and tennis.

Pupils also have the opportunity to go sailing and kayaking at a local reservoir in the school’s own boats.

The school offers a varied and active after-school clubs programme such as chess, fencing, judo, art, gardening, debating, all the major sports (including hockey and rugby) and board games.  There is after-school care for pupils up to age 7 to 5.30pm and a homework club for the older pupils to 5.45pm.  Older pupils can also attend the Breakfast Club from 7.45am.

School lunches are compulsory but of an excellent standard; indeed the school was recently awarded a “Jamie Oliver” Award for the standard of its food.  Pupils help themselves to a range of healthy options including a hot main dish, pasta, baked potatoes and a salad bar.  The food is cooked by our own chefs in-house and the food is sourced locally and where available, it is organic.  A local farm supplies much of the meat, and pupils are able to visit the farm as part of their curriculum in Year 4.

Whilst most pupils will naturally proceed through to Truro School and indeed about 40 pupils each year proceed into Year 7 at Truro School from the Prep School, the school believes that entrance to Truro School and the attendant examinations should not become the sole outcome of the pupils’ final years in the school and that education should remain broad and balanced.

Truro School and Truro Prep share a Methodist foundation; the schools share a governing body and although they are located on separate campuses, they are administered very much as one school.
