Stone floors are practical and very easy to maintain. They continue to look good and some even improve with age, and they will never need replacing. The choice of stone will be made mainly on aesthetic grounds except in a kitchen , and while there are many aspects to consider, we believe two are of overriding importance.
Choose a stone which is appropriate to the context in which it will be laid, and importantly a colour and pattern of laying that does not dominate the room. Also paying attention to the wall that the stone relates to, the period and style of the building.
Even if a house has no other stone element, the floor needs to be appropriate to the period and location. It should either feel part of the history of the building or be a clear and uncompromisingly modern contrast. You could, for example, in an old rough walled room, set smoothly polished travertine in steel frames so that it does not touch the walls, to provide an interesting counterpoint of textures.
Lime or Sandstone has a beautiful warmth and lends itself well to underfloor heating, York stone can look particularly good when laid in large flagstones.
